Week of April 26 for Ryan, Gabe, Kristen, and Vanessa -- Practice Working with Decimals: Multiplication and Subtraction
(Note -- if any other enrichment students want to work on this for extra practice -- great!! It will give you some practice with ideas you'll be working on in 6th grade math! It's also a way to demonstrate advanced understanding. )
Questions: 1. You watched a demonstration of the standard algorithm for division. Do you see how it is different from the partial quotients (hangman) method? 2. How come you can move the decimal when you divide? (Remember, you always move it the same number of places in the dividend AND divisor.)
Question: When we multiply whole numbers by whole numbers, the answer is usually a larger number. Is this true when we multiply decimals? Why or why not?
Write Ms. Jones a letter reviewing what you have learned. Make sure your letter is clear, complete, and answers the questions listed above.
The letter and Mytestbook tests are due next Tuesday, May 4.
Week of May 10 -- Enrichment Group
Hi Everyone,
Here is your challenge for this week. (See link below.) Please type your replies into this wiki below the challenge problem. Your answer should be complete...explain which way you would rather be paid and and why. Make sure your name is at the beginning or end of your post. Include specific numbers to explain your ideas. Your answer should be a complete paragraph at least. Make sure your ideas are easy to understand for your reader. (Suggestion: Type your answer into a word document and then past into the wiki.) Show your good thinking! Also, respond to at least one other person by typing right into the wiki. If you want extra challenge, write an additional paragraph about why being able so solve this kind of challenge will help you in your real life! Due -- Friday, May 14.

In the challenge you can get paid $20 a day for a seven day week or you get paid $2 the first day then have it doubled every day. I would rather get paid $2 the first day the have it doubled. You start off getting less than $20 then get up to six times as much as that on the last day of the week. Altogether at the end of the week you get over $200 where as at the end of the week with the $20 you only have $140. I think I would rather get paid $2 then have it double every day.
By: Luke
But I thought 2 dollars doubled is 4, then 8, then, Oh! I see. I thought when it said doubled it meant times 2, not 10.
By: Gabe
I would rather go with doubling salery everyday. $20 everyday whould be more in the beginning but not that much in a longer time. I charted that in about ten days if you get $20 a day it would only be $200 and it your salery doubled you would get $1,042! And plus, think of it, how much would you have if you worked for a year! It would be heaven if you started at $2 ten have it double.
By: Mike
I would totally go with two dollars doubled every day. At the end of the week you would have $128 dollars instead of $20. It is nearly 6x better than $20. It doesn't double every day forever so $128 is ok. That's why I would go with $2 doubled.
By: Ms. J
Mike, I think the $128 is the payment on day 7, not the total, yes?
By Ms. J
Gabe, Hmmmm. how did you get $1042? I'd like to see your thinking/calculations.
By Ryan:
I would rather be paid 2$ double because my salary would keep doubling and doubling. It is true that at the end of the first week that a 20$ daily salary would earn 140 dollars a week ,more than the 2$ double salary of the first week ,but in the long run you could earn as much money as 5 pro sports players.
By Vanessa
I would rather get paid 2$ and have it double . I would rather have this salary because after one week I wouldn't get as much as 20$ a week but after 2 week I'd have more money with it doubling than getting 20$ a day it might start out low but then it will get much higher and higher . Like after 11 days i would have 2048$ and with the 20 I would have 280$ in 2 weeks.
By: Lauren R.
I would rather get paid $20 a day 7 days a week. If you do that you will end up with $140. Rather if you double your money instead... you will end up with less money at the end of the week. I would rather get paid $20 a day at 7 days a week.
By : TJ
I would reather get piad $20 every 7 days becuse i get piad mor than $2 one day and doubble every day but in the long run I would be piad the $2 one day and have it doulle becuse I would have a lot more money than the other one. But one week I would take the $20 every seven days.
By: Jun
I would totally agree with mike. I would take $20 becaue if you multiplie 2*7 it is only $14. It is 6$ less than than 2.
Summing Up, by Ms. J
Great thinking, everyone. It can be misleading on day 1 -- of course I'd rather get $20 than $2!! But the long term view changes things, yes? There is a wonderful folktale called "One Grain of Rice," by Demi that demonstrates this idea beautifully. Here is a brief summary of the story:
Many years ago, there lived a selfish raja in India. He ruled that all the people should give him almost all of their rice for safekeeping, so that in a time of need there would be rice to eat. One year, a famine hit and no one had any rice to eat, but the raja would not give the stored rice to the people because he wanted to save it for himself. One day a clever girl named Rani created a plan to help the starving people of India. She asked the raja for one grain of rice and for each day for thirty days she asked the raja to double the amount of rice given the day before. The raja did not realize how much one grain of rice would amount to if it were doubled every day for one month. The raja learned a valuable lesson about selfishness and Rani saved the people of India from starvation through her cunningness and her understanding of math.
I encourage you to find the book and read it. It's a great math story!!
Challenge for Week of 5-17-10
This week you can combine your love of math and baseball. I'm asking you to extend the work on data analysis we've been doing in class to analyze the Rockies' batting quality this year (so far.) Choose at least on of the batting average statistics from this link. Colorado Rockies batting
You may choose multiple statistics, but you must do at least one. I encourage you to look at data represented by whole numbers -- they''ll be much easier to work with on a line plot.
Create a line plot of the team for that statistic. For example, you might analyze number of hits or number of runs. I'll want you to turn in your line plot in class, but more importantly, I'd like you to post your analysis in the discussion board linked to this page. Each person should post a complete analysis (use the rubric I gave you in class) and also respond to at least one peer...let them know if you agree, disagree, what you think are strengths and weaknesses of their analysis. Please complete by
Friday, 5-21-10. I look forward to reading your ideas and being persuaded to agree with your analysis.
Kristen: The Rockies had a big range this season. The high was 47 hits and the low was 0 hits. The mode was 0 and the median was 3 and one half. The data was consintrated between o and 8. 47 was an outleir. I think that this season, the mean of the hits were 11. 0 was hit the most. I think the Rockies had an okay season from loooking at this data.
Jun: The Rockies got 36 home-runs in all. The median was 0 and the mode was 0. The mean is 1R9 and the range is 8. The maximun was 8 and the minimun was 0.Miquel Olivo did the best. he had 8 home runs
Luke: Kristen, good job. I agree. The Rockies had an O.K. season. They hit good and bad. Why do you think the Rockies had an O.K. season? That was your weakness to me in your analysis.
Vanessa:The mode for the Rockies was the number 0. The median was 2. The maximun was 28 and minimun was 0. The Rockies didn't have the best season because the numbers weren't very high.
Vanessa: I agree with your information Jun. But i think you can add some more information kind of how Kristen did. Other than that it was pretty good.
TJ: I did the rockies RBI's wich stands for Runs Batted In. The median was 2 wich is likely becuse they havent played alot of games the mode was 0 becuse most people havent got to play alot. wich would make sence considering they've only played 40 or so games. The Rockies are having a pretty good seson. The max was 28 and the min was 0. The Rockies RBI's are pretty good at the begin of the seson
By: Lauren: I did the hits. The median was 4 hits because the number of people was 31 an that divided by 2 is 15.5 and that is why I got 4, I counted back. The range was 47 hits, C. Gonzalaz got the most hits and 9 other people got the least hits at 0. The mode was 0 hits because 9 people got 0 hits and that is the most commen number in the whole hitting graph. The mean was 11.419 hits, because the total was 354 hits divided by 31 people was this number!
By Lauren: Great job Jun! I got the same answers while doing (practicing) that one! But next time could you be a little more specific? But other then that, You got the answers right! :)
By: Mike- I did the home runs. miguel olivo did the best because he did 8 home runs. Ean Stewart also did good because he did 6 home runs. Several players had 0 home runs. The median would be 4 home runs and the range is 0 to 8. Lauren - It is interesting that median hits is four and the median for home runs is also 4. Good job!
here we can talk about our enrichment
If you want to get a head-start on two enrichment problems we'll work on after break, here they are. Have fun!
